What a Modern Meter Shop Needs

A meter shop is judged on two things: accurate results and records that stand up to an audit. RADIAN and WECO meter shop equipment brings automated test boards, warm-up and qualification systems, and AMI meter farms together under one data system, WATT-Net, so every test is standardized, traceable and on record.

The four building blocks

  • Automated meter test boards: the WECO 4050X, 4150X and 4330X for single-position ANSI C12.1 and legacy C12.20 accuracy testing, with harmonics to the 60th.
  • Warm-up and qualification: WECO 9000 and 9200 warm-up boards and WECO 8020/8030 meter qualification boards condition and screen meters before accuracy testing.
  • AMI meter farms: the WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm for functional testing, firmware updates and communications checks at the row level.
  • Test data management: WATT-Net meter test and asset management software ties every result to the meterโ€™s lifecycle record.

Data and IT

WATT-Net runs on Windows 11 with SQL or Oracle databases, offers role-based access, and connects to CIS, ERP and AMI systems through the OData-based Listener API, answering the questions IT will ask before approval.

Multiple WECO 4050X, 4150X and 4330X automated test boards can connect to one computer, so a shop can grow capacity without adding workstations.

How to Choose Meter Shop Test Equipment

Most meter shops combine several of these systems. Start from the work your shop does most often, then add warm-up, qualification and AMI capacity as programs grow.

Meter Shop FAQ

What is a meter test board, and when do you need one?

A meter test board applies controlled voltage and current to a revenue meter and compares its registration against a reference standard, checking accuracy at the test points ANSI C12.1 specifies, such as full load, light load and power factor. Utilities use test boards to check new meters before installation, meters returned from the field, and samples drawn for a statistical testing program. Automated boards such as the WECO 4050X, 4150X and 4330X run programmed test sequences and store the results, so every meter is tested the same way.

Requirements vary by state commission, but most expect a record for each meter tested: meter ID, test date, the test points and results, the technician, and the reference standard used along with its calibration traceability. Keeping these records in a database rather than on paper makes them easier to retrieve for an audit or a billing dispute. WATT-Net stores each result with the meterโ€™s lifecycle history for this reason.

An AMI meter must be accurate, and it also has to communicate. Beyond ANSI accuracy testing, utilities check power-up, display, communications, firmware version, remote disconnect and head-end integration. Warm-up and qualification boards such as the WECO 9000 and WECO 8020/8030 cover these functional checks, and the WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm lets a utility validate new meters and firmware updates in a controlled environment before deployment.
