Wireless Meter Pulse Generator

SSI MPG-3

The SSI MPG-3 Wireless Meter Pulse Generator is our third-generation Zigbee pulse generator, designed to integrate AMI smart meters with legacy KYZ pulse metering infrastructure. Using Zigbee radio technology, the MPG-3 receives usage data from the meter’s HAN network, interprets power consumption, and generates KYZ pulses — without requiring a physical KYZ output at the meter.

All settings are configured via a USB programming port using the SSI Universal Programmer software, allowing full control over pulse value, meter multiplier, output mode, and pulse timing. The MPG-3 supports both unidirectional and bidirectional energy flow and is compatible with self-contained and instrument-rated electric meters.

Product Highlights

The MPG-3 features two solid state Form A or Form C dry contact outputs with selectable momentary or toggle modes and six programmable pulse width settings. A 30 ms minimum-off time delay prevents runaway pulse generation, and red, yellow, and green LEDs provide at-a-glance communication and output status.

The MPG-3 mounts in any position and fits inside a user-supplied or optional NEMA 4X fiberglass enclosure. An optional MPG-3EX external adapter allows the Zigbee module to be mounted outside metal enclosures to preserve radio performance.

Features

The MPG-3 equips utilities to implement new advanced AMI meters and still provide pulses to customers that may need them
  • Zigbee radio receives usage data directly from the AMI meter's HAN network, with no KYZ output needed at the meter.
  • Two solid-state dry-contact KYZ outputs, Form A (2-wire) or Form C (3-wire).
  • Form A momentary mode with six pulse widths from 25 to 1,000 ms; Form C toggle mode emulates a classic KYZ output.
  • Normal mode for kWh delivered (unidirectional) or signed mode for kWh delivered and received (bidirectional).
  • Pulse values from 1 to 99,999 Wh per pulse, with a meter multiplier of 1 to 99,999, set with the SSI Universal Programmer over USB.
  • Communications and output LEDs, plus a fixed 30 ms minimum-off time that prevents runaway pulses.
  • Compact (3.1 × 7.2 × 1.5 in, 1 lb), mounts in any position, operates from -38 °C to +70 °C; optional NEMA 4X enclosure and MPG-3EX external adapter.

Zigbee AMI-to-KYZ Pulse Converter

Setting Up an MPG-3, Step by Step
  1. Mount and power the MPG-3 near the meter, in any position, from 120 or 208–277 VAC. Inside a metal enclosure, use the MPG-3EX external adapter to mount the Zigbee module outside.
  2. Program it over USB with the SSI Universal Programmer: pulse value, meter multiplier, output mode, and pulse timing.
  3. Provision it with the meter’s HAN radio. The utility, or its website, pairs the MPG-3 with the meter.
  4. Confirm and connect. Check the communications and output LEDs, then connect the KYZ outputs to the customer’s equipment.

Which SSI Pulse Generator Fits Your Meter?

Both SSI wireless pulse generators let utilities install AMI meters and keep providing KYZ pulses to customers who rely on them. Choose by the meter’s radio: Wi-Fi for the Itron Gen5 Riva, or Zigbee for meters with a HAN radio.

Need to send pulses to a Modbus system? See the SSI PMC-1 Pulse-to-Modbus Converter. To isolate pulse outputs, see the SSI SPR-1 and SPR-24 Pulse Isolation Relays, or use the SSI Pulse Metering Product Selector.

SSI MPG-3 FAQ

What does the MPG-3 do

The MPG-3 receives usage data from an AMI meter's HAN network over Zigbee, calculates energy, and outputs KYZ pulses. Customers who rely on pulses keep receiving them after the utility installs an AMI meter.

The MPG-3 works with self-contained or instrument-rated AMI meters that have a Zigbee HAN radio. For the Itron Gen5 Riva with a Wi-Fi interface, see the SSI WPG-1.

Yes. Normal mode counts kWh delivered for one-way energy flow, and signed mode counts kWh delivered and received for bidirectional flow, such as sites with on-site generation.

The MPG-3 is provisioned with the meter's HAN radio by the utility or through the utility's website. Once paired, it begins receiving data and generating pulses.

Yes. The optional MPG-3EX external adapter mounts the Zigbee module outside a metal enclosure to preserve radio performance. An optional NEMA 4X fiberglass enclosure (10 × 8 × 4 in) is also available.
