Featuring Ethernet or Wireless XBeeโ„ข Remote Control

WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm

The WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm is a customizable meter functional testing and evaluation platform built for utilities that need stable workflows for AMI programs.

Using the Ethernet or the wireless XBee IOT ecosystem, it delivers remote control of core functions at the row level, so you can manage meter farm operation with greater precision, consistency, and confidenceโ€”whether installed indoors or in outdoor-ready configurations.

Product Highlights

Designed to improve day-to-day operational reliability and control, the WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm allows you to remotely actuate voltage, current, and direction of energy flow for each meter row, then view the status of those settings across the entire farm from a single computer using WATT-Net SMART AMI Meter Farm software. Standard systems use XBee 900 MHz communications for range and performance, with additional XBee or Ethernet network options available.

Every farm is built to customer specificationsโ€”using high-quality components and materialsโ€”and can be constructed as multiple single or double panels with virtually any meter form socket or load configuration. High-grade aluminum panels are available in fixed or mobile structures, helping ensure long-term durability and installation flexibility without sacrificing testing stability.

Features

Fully Customizable, Meter Testing And Evaluation Platform
  • Wireless row-level remote control for precise adjustment of voltage, current, and energy flow directionโ€”supporting repeatable, stable meter testing setups.
  • Centralized visibility and control using WATT-Net SMART AMI Meter Farm software to view row settings across the full farm for more reliable operations.
  • Local override for added control: each row can be set to disable remote control, preventing non-local changes and supporting process accuracy and governance.
  • Intuitive interface controls to quickly change settings by specific rows/panels, plus global tools to update the entire farm efficiently.
  • Custom-built to your requirements: choose meter socket mix by meter forms, voltages, load amperages, and socket positioningโ€”built for the right balance of accuracy, reliability, and throughput.
  • Built for indoor or outdoor environments
  • Supports core utility use cases including firmware updates, sample meter qualification before full deployment, and long-term testing of meters or hardware prior to release.

What Utilities Use a Meter Farm For

An AMI meter farm puts meters on panels and powers them the way they run in service, so a utility can see how meters, firmware and communications behave before thousands of them reach customers.

A large community-owned electric utility on the West Coast built its AMI validation program on the WECO SMART AMI Meter Farm. Read the case study for how each use case works.

  1. Pre-deployment meter validation: confirm accuracy, communications and load handling before rollout.
  2. Firmware validation: test updates on a controlled population before pushing them to the field.
  3. Head-end and system integration: check that meters, the head-end and back-office systems work together.
  4. DER, solar and EV rate testing: validate bidirectional energy flow and time-of-use rates.
  5. Long-duration reliability: run meters for weeks or months to find early failures.

SMART AMI Meter Farm FAQ

What is an AMI meter farm?

A group of AMI meters installed on panels and energized the way they would be in service. It lets a utility test communications, firmware and head-end integration on a controlled population of meters before deploying them to customers.

Yes. Voltage, current and direction of energy flow can be set for each meter row over Ethernet or wireless XBee (900 MHz is standard), and the status of the whole farm is visible from one computer in WATT-Net SMART AMI Meter Farm software. Any row can be locked to local control to prevent remote changes.
