Why Test at the Site

Many metering errors donโ€™t live in the meter. They live in the installation: a mis-wired CT, an overloaded secondary, a cracked test switch. RADIAN field equipment verifies the meter, the CTs and PTs, and the whole site under real operating conditions, without taking the customer out of service.

Accuracy on distorted waveforms

Todayโ€™s services carry harmonic-rich waveforms from inverters, chargers and electronic loads. Instruments built around off-the-shelf converters lose accuracy on those signals. RADIAN Dytronic and Xytronic measurement technology holds its accuracy on non-sinusoidal waveforms, so a field test means the same thing as a test in the shop.

CT and PT verification

A meter can be perfect and still bill wrong if the CT ratio, burden or wiring is off. RADIAN and UTEC tools verify ratio, burden and polarity at the site, catching installation errors that a bench test never sees.

Our white paper Revenue Protection Through Field-Based Meter Site Analysis explains where installation errors hide and what they cost.

Match the Tool to the Job

Field crews rarely need every tool. Match the instrument to the work, from full site analysis of transformer-rated services to quick burden checks.

Field Testing FAQ

Can you test a meter without removing it from the socket?

Yes. Meter site analyzers such as the RW-30X and RW-31X test installed meters in service, under the customerโ€™s actual load, and verify the CTs and PTs at the same time. Phantom-load kits such as the UTEC 430 can also test through the test switch with a controlled source when customer load is too low or too variable.

Burden is the total load connected to a current transformerโ€™s secondary: the meter, the test switch, the wiring and every connection. Each CT is rated to hold its accuracy up to a specified burden. Long wire runs, corroded terminals or added devices push burden higher, and the CTโ€™s accuracy degrades, often at low load, where many sites operate for much of the day. A burden tester such as the UTEC 585 measures the actual burden at the site so it can be compared against the CTโ€™s rating.
