Wireless Meter Pulse Generator

SSI WPG-1

The SSI WPG-1 Wireless Meter Pulse Generator is our wireless Pulse Link to the ITRON Gen5/Riva meter, integrating advanced AMI smart meter technology with legacy KYZ pulse metering. Using a Wi-Fi interface, the WPG-1 receives usage data from the meter, interprets power usage, and converts it into KYZ pulses — without requiring a physical KYZ output at the meter. This allows utilities to deploy the latest AMI meters while continuing to provide pulse outputs to customers who depend on them.

The WPG-1 incorporates a Wi-Fi radio module and two independent KYZ pulse outputs. Each output is individually configurable for pulse type (kWh, kVAh, or kVARh) and value, in either delivered or received quantities. All settings are managed through a USB programming port using the SSI Universal Programmer software.

Product Highlights

The WPG-1’s two independently configurable outputs offer flexibility for complex metering applications — one output can be set for delivered kWh while the other monitors kVARh received, for example — all from a single device. Output pulse values are selectable from 1 to 99,999 Wh, VAh, or VARh per pulse, with a meter multiplier of 1 to 99,999.

LED indicators provide immediate visual confirmation of both pulse output status and Wi-Fi communications health without the need for additional test equipment. A 30mS fixed minimum-off time delay ensures reliable, clean pulse output. For installations requiring weatherproof outdoor housing, the WPG-1E and WPG-1SC variants offer NEMA 4X enclosure options.

Features

The WPG-1 integrates AMI smart meter technology with legacy KYZ pulse metering.
  • Wi-Fi interface receives usage data directly from the Itron Gen5 Riva meter, with no KYZ output needed at the meter.
  • Two independent KYZ outputs, each set to kWh, kVAh, or kVARh, delivered or received.
  • Form A (2-wire, momentary, six pulse widths from 25 to 1,000 ms) or Form C (3-wire, toggle) on each output.
  • Pulse values from 1 to 99,999 Wh, VAh, or VARh per pulse, with a meter multiplier of 1 to 99,999.
  • LEDs for each output and for Wi-Fi communications status, plus a fixed 30 ms minimum-off time for clean pulses.
  • Compact (3.1 × 7.2 × 1.5 in, 1 lb), mounts in any position, operates from -38 °C to +70 °C, with NEMA 4X versions (WPG-1E and WPG-1SC).

Setting Up a WPG-1, Step by Step
  1. Mount and power the WPG-1 near the meter, in any position, from 120 or 208–277 VAC. Use the WPG-1E or WPG-1SC for outdoor installations.
  2. Program it over USB with the SSI Universal Programmer: pulse type, pulse value, meter multiplier, output mode, and pulse timing.
  3. Pair it with the meter. The utility pairs the WPG-1 with the meter’s Wi-Fi interface, and the WPG-1 begins receiving data.
  4. Confirm and connect. Check the communications and output LEDs, then connect the KYZ outputs to the customer’s equipment.

Which SSI Pulse Generator Fits Your Meter?

Both SSI wireless pulse generators let utilities install AMI meters and keep providing KYZ pulses to customers who rely on them. Choose by the meter’s radio: Wi-Fi for the Itron Gen5 Riva, or Zigbee for meters with a HAN radio.

Need to send pulses to a Modbus system? See the SSI PMC-1 Pulse-to-Modbus Converter. To isolate pulse outputs, see the SSI SPR-1 and SPR-24 Pulse Isolation Relays, or use the SSI Pulse Metering Product Selector.

SSI WPG-1 FAQ

What does the WPG-1 do

The WPG-1 receives usage data from an Itron Gen5 Riva meter over Wi-Fi, calculates accumulated energy, and outputs KYZ pulses based on the pulse type and value you program. Customers who rely on pulses keep receiving them after the utility installs an AMI meter.

The WPG-1 works with self-contained or instrument-rated Itron Gen5 Riva meters equipped with a Wi-Fi interface. For AMI meters with a Zigbee HAN radio, see the SSI MPG-3.

Yes. Each output is set independently. For example, one output can report kWh delivered while the other reports kVARh received.

The utility pairs the WPG-1 with the meter's Wi-Fi interface. Once paired, the WPG-1 begins receiving data and generating pulses.

Yes. The WPG-1E and WPG-1SC versions come in a lockable NEMA 4X raintight, dustproof enclosure (10 × 8 × 4 in), and the WPG-1 operates from -38 °C to +70 °C.
