Why Small Meter Errors Matter

Every kilowatt-hour a customer pays for is decided by a meter. A meter that reads slow loses revenue on every kilowatt-hour it measures. A meter that reads fast bills customers for energy they did not use, which leads to complaints, refunds and questions from regulators. A 0.1% error sounds small, but across 100,000 residential meters using 10,000 kWh a year at $0.15 per kWh, it comes to about $150,000 a year.

How to Use the Calculator

Choose a scenario, then enter your own numbers or start from a preset:

• Meters in service: enter the number of meters, their average usage and price, the average meter error, and how long the error goes unnoticed before the next test. A negative error means the meters read slow; a positive error means they read fast.
• Test equipment drift: enter how many meters you test each year, the error in the standard you test them against, and how long a tested meter stays in service.

The results show the revenue affected per year, over the full period, and per customer bill. The “How it’s calculated” table lists every step, so you can check the math or share it with your team.

When the Error Is in the Test Equipment

An error in a single meter affects one customer. An error in the standard used to test meters is different: every meter tested against it can inherit the error, and those meters stay in service for years. That is why the accuracy and traceability of your reference standard matter so much.
