Pulse-to-Current Loop Converter

PCL-2

The SSI PCL-2 Pulse-to-Current Loop Converter is the second-generation device designed to convert a 2-wire KY pulse input into an analog 4–20mA current output, readable by any device with a standard 4–20mA input such as a SCADA system, energy management controller, PLC, or recorder. The 4–20mA output can be configured to represent the current instantaneous or average rate of usage across electric, water, gas, and non-energy general-purpose pulse metering applications — making it significantly more versatile than the original PCL-1, which was limited to kilowatt demand.

The PCL-2 accepts a KY pulse directly from a meter or isolation relay, supplies its own +13VDC wetting voltage, and uses a 12-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter for high-resolution output — providing 1/4096th of full-scale resolution compared to the PCL-1’s 1/256th. A +24VDC loop power supply is all that is needed to drive the 4–20mA current loop; no additional power wiring is required at the receiving device.

Product Highlights

The PCL-2’s 12-bit DAC delivers substantially finer output resolution than its predecessor, making it well suited for applications requiring precise analog representation of demand or flow rate — such as SCADA integration, analog chart recorders, or programmable controllers with high-resolution analog inputs. Built-in transient and reverse polarity protection on the current loop output eliminates the need for external protection devices.

Programming is handled via the PCL-2’s USB port. A red LED indicates input pulse status at all times, and a green LED confirms when the 4–20mA output is being updated — enabling fast visual system verification without additional test equipment. An output test point allows the current level to be read directly with a digital multimeter.

Features

The SSI PCL-2 converts a KY pulse input to a 4–20mA analog output representing instantaneous or average demand across electric, water, or gas metering applications.
  • 4–20mA current loop output — configurable for instantaneous or average rate-of-usage across electric, water, gas, or general-purpose pulse metering.
  • 12-bit DAC resolution — 1/4096th of full-scale output resolution for precise analog representation of demand or flow rate.
  • KY pulse input with +13VDC wetting — compatible with dry contact and open-collector transistor meter outputs.
  • +24VDC loop power — standard loop voltage is all that is needed at the receiving device; no additional wiring required.
  • Programmable full-scale output — configures the 4–20mA range to match the maximum expected demand or usage rate.
  • Built-in transient and reverse polarity protection — protects the current loop output without external surge devices.
  • Red and green LED indicators — red for pulse input status; green for current output update confirmation.
