The RD-20 Portable Single-phase Electricity Standard has a typical accuracy of 0.01% with a maximum worst case accuracy of 0.04% across its entire voltage and current operating range. This worst case accuracy specification includes the variables of stability, power factor, traceability uncertainty and test system errors. The RD-20 inherits many of the field proven attributes of the Radian RM-10, RM-12 and RM-15 portable standards while incorporating a new state-of-the-art measurement technology.

The RD-20 utilizes Radian's new Dytronic measurement technology consisting of a Radian designed Integrating Analog to Digital Signal Converter. Unlike off-the-shelf A/D Converters used in other instruments, Radian's Dytronic A/D Converter is specifically designed and optimized for power and energy measurement. This enables the RD-20 to attain exceptional accuracies even when measuring "real world" distorted waveforms.

The RD-20 provides four quadrant single-phase simultaneous measurements for active and reactive energy and power. The potential, current, and auxiliary power inputs are totally autoranging. This autoranging feature was pioneered by Radian Research and makes it impossible to damage the unit by applying a signal to the wrong tap. The potential input range is 60 to 600 volts, the current input range is available as either one input ranging from 0.2 to 125 amps, or as three inputs each ranging from 0.2 to 67 amps. The auxiliary power ranges from 80 to 600 volts.

Due to its small package size and light weight of only 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds), the RD-20 is ideal for use as the reference during field testing of electricity meters. For field testing applications, the RD-20 can be used with a controlled current load, or it can be used with a clamp-on current transformer available from Radian to perform customer load tests. The optional harmonic analysis capability can analyze customer load through the 50th harmonic order. To save time and reduce the possibility of errors, the RD-20 can optionally provide automatic calculation of test results for the meter being tested, eliminating the need for an external comparator.

The RD-20 is also well suited for use as the reference within electricity meter test tables. The serial communications port on the RD-20 allows for direct connection to a personal computer. Various software packages are available to fit different user applications.
